The first useful Internet service for the masses was email. Then, came the graphical web in the form of websites. Over the last few years, the Internet has expanded with powerful applications such as blogs, instant messaging, e-commerce, peer to peer voice communication, video, online news, podcasting, multiplayer gaming, photo sharing, online maps, and such other terms that have entered into the vocabulary of internet as these services became popular with the users. Modern technology called for people to be engaged through online in various ways and adopt multiple responsibilities and roles. People are no longer limited to a specific role, such as a blogger. Instead, those who are at the forefront of adopting social media have multiple accounts across blog-sites and video sharing platforms.
Today, there is high involvement with micro-blogging, video uploading, photo uploading, and many other interactions with digital media. An IDC research predicts that internet users in Malaysia will reach 20.4 million by 2012. Moreover, the top rated uses of internet are towards the social networks and there are various social network used by the society nowadays such as Facebook, Friendster, Myspace, Twitter and Tagged. The above figure shows that there are 72.57% of internet users in Malaysia using social media networks. Based on Alexa and Google Ad Planner, as on the 1 March 2010, Facebook has become the number one social networking site in Malaysia with over 5.1 million facebook users in Malaysia and over 6.2 million unique visitors per month. While Friendster once dominated the social networking in Malaysia, Facebook has overtaken Friendster. People are too addicted with Facebook because they have the instinct to stay connected with friends and make new acquaintances.
