Role of Computer in Development
According to a survey carried out by an international magazine in 1982, The "Man of the Year" was the 'Computer’ which is a very important substance which has a big impact in people’s lives. Computer in Latin means "to reckon" or 'to compute'. Some experts have coined a word for it 'INFORMATIC'. It is the science of information processing including methods of recording, manipulation and retrieving information. It is a calculating device with some special characteristics and abilities like performing complex and repetitive calculations rapidly and accurately, make decisions and automatically correct or modify by providing signals, converse with users through terminals etc. Computers have become such an important part of our lives all around us like in airports, banks, railway stations and every well equipped modern office. As computer continues to proliferate in ever increasing numbers across the globe in large segments of Government, business and industry, the people are beginning to believe hesitantly that computers can actually keep the promise they had offered. The society gradually believes in the fact that computers will change the manner in which the things are done all around us. Computers substantially save valuable man-hours by helping people through faster and reliable communication like to make reservation of tickets, operate their bank accounts, to pay for electricity water and telephone bills, insurance premium and also do routine shopping way so faster and it can be relied on. Trains are operated automatically by computers and the traffic signals are computer coordinated to produce best traffic patterns, increase reliability and safety and provide more efficient services. Computer is bringing new hope in the health sector too.
