Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
Good educational background, highly competitive skills and innovative mentality are some of the many ingredients to be globally competitive. Competitiveness involves some elements that can neither be acquired nor nurtured in a constructive environment particularly in school. Producing globally competitive Filipino workers is one of the many goals of the University of Perpetual Help System Laguna, officially stated on the mission/vision statement. And one way of maintaining a purely productive yet globally competitive Perpetualite is to train it in full knowledge of its own field of study, both in theories and application. UPHSL College of Computer Studies is very much concern in producing fully productive and quality computer professionals. A reflection to this is a fully compacted curriculum presently in existence to the College of Computer Studies. It is always the first priority to train CSIT students with full knowledge theoretically and application wise. It is then necessary to evaluate the student’s level of proficiency about all the subjects accordingly listed on the curriculum to identify the learning that students gained during its stay in College. And Computer Proficiency is a tool that can be an innovative solution to this instance.
“Computer Proficiency: An Electronic Comprehensive Examination that Evaluates UPHSL CSIT 3rd Year Students Intellectual Capacity” is a computerized diagnostic examination that measures UPHSL - 3rd year Information Technology and Computer Science students intellectual capacity (computer know-how) through a multiple choice electronic randomized questions. Through this, identification of level of proficiency in each subject matter would be generated. In their own field of study, both in theories and application, all the major subjects in range of 1st year to 3rd year respectively written into the curriculum were categorized into Computer Fundamentals, Programming, Operating System, Management Information System and Graphics and Animation. However, the categories formulated by the researchers are not in control of determining the level of proficiency; it is the subject respectively written on the curriculum itself. These categories were originated purposely just to organize all the subject matter.
Computer Proficiency identifies student’s proficiency level which could develop the student’s total quality as a future Information Technology professional in near time by making them aware of what they know most. Coverage of the said quiz comes from all the major subjects included at the curriculum presently used by the students, which was been studied since 1st year up to 3rd year.
This simply measures students’ level of proficiency (cognitive level/ intellectual capacity/ know-how) collaborated about computer classes examined in three year stay in school with respect to the major subjects officially listed on the curriculum in range of 1st year to 3rd year.
Existence of Electronic Comprehensive Examination on UPHSL College of Computer Studies is not in occurrence, in reason to that, the researchers use the structure of the existing system of the Computerized UPHSL Faculty English Proficiency Examination as a guideline in creating Computer Proficiency, which is shown in Figure 1.0.
Figure 1.0 is the existing Computerized Faculty Proficiency...
